Details

All forty-four of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s love sonnets, one to a page, each with a short plain-English note before it, so the old words and references are clear before you read. She wrote them while Robert Browning was courting her, and kept them private while the courtship lasted. It is something a screen cannot give: a real book you hold, write in, and hand on.

Who it is for

For couples marking an anniversary or a wedding, for anyone who knows “How do I love thee” and wants the forty-three sonnets around it, and for readers who like to know what a poem is saying before they read it aloud. A “This book belongs to” page at the front, with space for the giver, the occasion and the year, makes it an easy book to give.

What is inside

  • All 44 sonnets, complete, in their numbered order from Sonnet I to Sonnet XLIV, including Sonnet XLIII, “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.”
  • One sonnet to a page: its number, a short title added for this edition (“Not Death, but Love”, “Counting the Ways”, “Flowers Given Back”), a note of a few lines, then the fourteen lines of the poem in 16.5-point Garamond.
  • Notes that say what happens in each sonnet and explain what a modern reader might miss: Electra’s urn, the old word “amerce”, chrism, the height of Aornus, Venice glass, rue and eglantine.
  • About This Book, a one-page introduction that follows the courtship through the sequence. The early sonnets argue against the love; the middle ones record a lock of hair, a packet of letters and a first kiss on the hand; the later ones look ahead.
  • A contents list at the front; at the back, a Keeping This Book page and a ruled Notes page.
