This book gives someone you love a way back to the school gate, the first wage and the Saturday-night dance, and a place to write it all down. Each question sits on its own page with room for the answer, so the stories end up on paper in their own words and handwriting. It is something a screen cannot give: a real book you hold, write in, and hand on.

Who it is for

For older readers, including people living with dementia or memory loss, and for the families, carers and activity staff who sit with them. The book is made for reminiscence: there are no wrong answers and no right speed. Read a page aloud and talk it through together, or keep it as a private journal.

What is inside

Eight chapters, each with its own opening page: First Day at School, The Schoolhouse, Best Friends at School, First Job, First Car or Bicycle, Music and Dances, Young Love, and Becoming an Adult. Across them are 80 activities, one to a page:

• 64 reminiscence prompts, set in 18pt type above ruled lines that fill the rest of the page. They ask about the smell of the classroom first thing in the morning, what was in the lunch box, the first wage, a tune on the wireless and the first front door key.
• 8 word searches: small 8 x 8 grids of eight themed words, running across or down only, with the solutions at the back.
• 8 picture pages, each with a frame for a family photograph and five questions to talk about.
