Whitman, with a guide at your elbow. Each of the 87 poems in this volume opens with a short plain-English note that says what the poem is doing, so you can start Song of Myself knowing where it is headed, then read the lines for themselves. This is Volume One of Leaves of Grass, and something a screen cannot give: a real book you hold, write in, and hand on.
Who it is for
For readers meeting Whitman for the first time, and for those who already love him and want a big-page copy to read aloud. A good gift for a poetry reader or a student of American literature. Children of Adam and Calamus are frank about the body and about friendship between men.
What is inside
- The first 87 poems of the final arrangement Whitman settled on, in eleven parts: a short opening poem signed with his name, Inscriptions (24 poems), Starting from Paumanok, Song of Myself, Children of Adam (16 poems) and Calamus (39 poems).
- Five longer poems to close: Salut au Monde!, Song of the Open Road, Crossing Brooklyn Ferry, Song of the Answerer and Our Old Feuillage.
- Song of Myself on pages 52 to 113, from "I celebrate myself" to "I stop somewhere waiting for you".
- A one-line heading and a plain-English note before every poem, such as "A ghost demands war poems" for As I Ponder'd in Silence.
- Poems in 16.5-point Garamond, notes in 16-point type.
- An About This Book introduction to Whitman and how the book grew from twelve untitled poems in 1855.
- A This Book Belongs To page, with lines for the owner, the giver, the occasion and the year.
