Details
Emily Dickinson’s poems are short and tightly packed, and a line sometimes needs reading twice before it opens. This edition puts a brief plain-English note at the head of every entry, so you know what the poem is about before you begin. It is something a screen cannot give: a real book you hold, write in, and hand on.
Who it is for
For readers who already love Dickinson and want her poems in one place, and for anyone meeting her for the first time. It suits a poem read aloud with a parent or grandparent, a few quiet pages at the end of the day, or a gift for someone who keeps poetry by the chair.
What is inside
- 246 titled entries, listed across eight pages of contents. Some entries gather two or more short poems under one heading.
- Well-known poems including ‘Hope is the thing with feathers’, ‘Because I could not stop for Death’, ‘I’m nobody! Who are you?’, ‘There is no frigate like a book’ and ‘I heard a fly buzz when I died’.
- Each entry opens with its title, a one-line subtitle and a short note in plain English that says what the poem is about and explains an unfamiliar word where one comes up, such as ‘abash’ or ‘frigate’.
- A one-page introduction on Dickinson’s quiet life in Amherst, how her poems were found after her death, and where the titles above the poems come from: her early editors, Mabel Loomis Todd and Thomas Wentworth Higginson.
- Poems set in 16.5-point Garamond, with the notes in 16-point.
- A ‘This Book Belongs To’ page for the owner, the giver, the occasion and the year, and a ruled Notes page at the back.
