Details
Give someone who grew up in Australia an easy way back to the beach, the bush track and the footy on a Saturday, and give the family a record of what they remember. The prompts ask one question to a page and leave room for the answer, in their own words and handwriting. It is something a screen cannot give: a real book you hold, write in, and hand on.
Who it is for
Older Australians who like to talk about where they grew up, people living with dementia or memory loss, and the family, carers and aged-care activity staff who sit with them. The book says it plainly: there are no wrong answers, it is never a test, and the pace is theirs.
What is inside
80 activities, one to a page, in eight chapters: The Beach Days, Bush Adventures, School Years, Country Town Life, Pavlova & Treats, Footy & Games, Family Gatherings and Home & Hearth. Every chapter holds ten:
- 8 reminiscence prompts: one question in 18pt bold type above 13 or 14 writing lines, such as "What did the air smell like when you first arrived at the beach?"
- 1 word search: an 8 x 8 grid hiding eight themed words, like SAND, SHELLS and BUCKET, running across or down only
- 1 "Look at this" page: a frame for a family photograph, or for imagining the scene, with five questions to talk about
That makes 64 prompts, 8 word searches and 8 picture pages, with a short guide at the front and the word search solutions at the back.
