Details
Evangeline is Longfellow's great love story, told whole and made to be read aloud. On the day of her betrothal feast, Evangeline's village of Grand-Pré is put under arrest and its people are shipped into exile. She and Gabriel are parted at the water's edge, and the poem follows her long search for him. This edition gives you the complete poem with a short plain-English note before every section, so the story is easy to follow whether you read it alone or out loud to someone you love. It is something a screen cannot give: a real book you hold, write in, and hand on.
Who it is for
- Readers who want Evangeline complete, not in extracts
- Families and couples who read aloud together, or anyone reading to an older parent
- A reader with Acadian roots, or a family link to Nova Scotia or Louisiana, where much of the story takes place
What is inside
- The prelude, "This is the forest primeval", with its own note
- Part the First, five sections: The village of Grand-Pré; Autumn evening and alarming news; The notary and the contract; The betrothal feast and the order; Embarkation and the burning
- Part the Second, five sections that follow her search: The scattering and her refusal; Down the Mississippi to the bayous; Basil found on the prairies; Westward to the Ozark mission; Philadelphia and the almshouse
- An About This Book introduction to Longfellow and the poem's long, unrhymed six-beat lines
