Details
Twenty-five days of Charles Spurgeon for December: a short reading each morning and another each evening, from 1 December to Christmas Day. It gives each day a few quiet minutes at either end, and it is something a screen cannot give: a real book you hold, write in, and hand on.
Who it is for
Anyone who wants a set reading to keep them company through December, a household that reads aloud together in the run-up to Christmas, or a churchgoing parent or grandparent as a gift. Spurgeon was a nineteenth-century London preacher and writes in the English of his day, with thee and thou. The note at the top of each day gives you the gist before you begin.
What is inside
- 50 readings from Spurgeon's Morning and Evening, two for each of the first 25 days of December.
- Each reading opens with the King James verse it is built on, from 27 books of the Bible. Psalm 74:17, "Thou hast made summer and winter", opens 1 December; Isaiah 7:14 and the name Immanuel open Christmas morning.
- Every day starts with a short plain-English note on both verses and what Spurgeon does with them.
- Each day has its own title, among them Summer, Winter and Praise; Ask, and the Four Carpenters; Orpah's Kiss, Ruth's Choice; and He Became Poor.
- Some readings close with a verse of a hymn or a few lines of poetry.
- A presentation page with lines for owner, giver, occasion and year, then a short introduction and a contents page.
