Gifts for Grandparents

Gifts for grandparents who have everything are hard to find, because the one thing they do not have is their own story written down. These books fix that. Each memory book is a large-print hardcover, 8.5 x 11 inches, with one prompt or activity to a page: the house they grew up in, Sunday lunches, the day they became a grandparent. Each memoir journal is a 6 x 9 paperback with one question to a page, so filling it in takes ten quiet minutes at a time, not a whole weekend. Give one to a grandmother or grandfather, or fill it in together on a visit, and the family ends up with a book in their handwriting. No screen, no app, no charger: a real book they hold, and the grandchildren keep.

What is inside

Thirteen books, each on one subject a grandparent can speak to. Eight are memory books: 1940s Memories, 1950s Memories, A Long Marriage, Becoming a Grandparent, Grandchildren, Houses You've Lived In, Sunday Lunches and Family Meals, and The Garden. They are large-print hardcovers, 8.5 x 11 inches, one prompt or activity to a page. Four are memoir journals: What I Want My Grandchildren to Know, The Recipes Nobody Wrote Down, The Town I Knew By Heart, and Leaving, Arriving, Belonging. They are 6 x 9 paperbacks, one question to a page. The last is Conversations With Grandparent at Christmas, a three-generation hardcover keepsake: the Christmases of their childhood, the ones they made for their children, and the ones since the grandchildren came. Prices run from A$54.95 to A$99.95.

Who gives it, and why

Usually adult grandchildren, or parents on behalf of young ones, for a birthday, Christmas, Mother's Day or Father's Day, when a grandparent has said "I don't need anything". A memory book gives them something to do with the grandchildren on a visit: one page, one question, a story nobody had heard. Becoming a Grandparent suits the first grandchild. A Long Marriage suits an anniversary. Leaving, Arriving, Belonging is for a family that migrated. The Recipes Nobody Wrote Down is for the grandparent who cooks by feel.

How it is made

Every book is printed to order, published under our Sovereign Publishing imprint. Hardcovers are case wrap with a matte cover; memoir journals are perfect-bound paperbacks. Shipping is free on every order, within Australia and internationally, with no minimum order value. Hardcovers take approximately four weeks to arrive, paperbacks approximately 10 to 12 business days. For a gift, our shipping policy recommends ordering hardcovers around six weeks ahead and paperbacks around three, and allowing longer in November and December.

How to choose

Are these books large print?

The eight memory books are large print, in a hardcover 8.5 x 11 inch format. The four memoir journals are 6 x 9 paperbacks and are not marked as large print.

Can a grandparent write in them with a pen?

Yes. They are made to be written in. Each page carries one prompt or question with the rest of the page left for the answer, on uncoated paper.

How long does delivery take?

Everything is made to order. Hardcover books take approximately four weeks; paperback journals approximately 10 to 12 business days. Delivery times are estimates and may be longer for remote destinations or during busy periods, particularly November and December.

Do you post outside Australia?

Yes. Shipping is free on every order, within Australia and internationally, with no minimum order value.

What if my grandparent says they have nothing to tell?

Choose a book on one narrow subject rather than a whole life: The Garden, Sunday Lunches and Family Meals, or Houses You've Lived In. A single question about a kitchen window is easier to answer than "tell me your story", and the rest follows.

Can I return it if it is not right?

Books are printed individually for each order, so we do not accept returns for change of mind. If a book arrives damaged, defective, misbound, misprinted or with missing pages, email us within 30 days of delivery with your order number and clear photos and, where applicable, we will arrange a replacement or refund at no cost to you.
