Details

Here are 283 short stories, most of them about a minute to read aloud, and each with something to argue about afterwards. The fox and the grapes, the hare and the tortoise, the shepherd's boy who cried wolf, and hundreds most of us have never met, all in one paperback for the family shelf. It is something a screen cannot give: a real book you hold, write in, and hand on.

Who it is for

Grandparents reading to grandchildren at bedtime. Older readers who want comfortable type and an uncrowded page. Families who grew up on a handful of these fables and want the rest of them in one place. A presentation page at the front makes it a considered gift.

What is inside

  • 283 of the 284 fables in V. S. Vernon Jones's 1912 translation, kept in the order he arranged them.
  • Every fable starts on a fresh page under its own heading. The story is set in 16.5-point Garamond, and most fill less than half the page.
  • Some close with a short moral, printed as Vernon Jones set it, such as "Much wants more and loses all." The rest stop where the story stops and leave the point to you.
  • The famous and the forgotten: The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs, The Mice in Council, The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse, The North Wind and the Sun, The Dog in the Manger, Hercules and the Waggoner.
  • About This Book, a one-page introduction on who Aesop was and how the collection grew, and a nine-page contents listing every fable with its page number.
  • A "This Book Belongs To" page for the name, the giver, the occasion and the year, and a ruled Notes page at the back.
  • Hummingbird and floral corner ornaments inside a double-ruled border, printed in greyscale.
