A gentle way back to the streets you grew up on. Tram bells, jars of sweets on the corner-shop counter, chalk on the pavement, washing on the line and the lamps coming on at dusk: each prompt asks one open question, and the answers become stories the family can keep, in the reader's own words and handwriting.

It is something a screen cannot give: a real book you hold, write in, and hand on.

Who it is for

Older readers who grew up in a city, and the people who sit with them: adult children, grandchildren, carers and care-home activity staff. It suits people living with dementia too. As the guide at the front says, there are no wrong answers and no right speed.

What is inside

80 activities, one to a page, across eight chapters: The Tram Routes, Corner Shop Days, Street Games, Neighbours and Doors, Park Afternoons, The Bus Ride, Washing Day Rhythms and Evening Lights. Every chapter has the same three kinds of activity:

  • 64 reminiscence prompts, eight to a chapter. Each question is set in large bold type, with ruled lines below to write on. For example: "What did the inside of your local corner shop smell like when you first walked in?"
  • 8 easy word searches. Small 8 x 8 grids in big letters, words running across or down only, with the answers at the back.
  • 8 picture pages. A frame for a family photograph, or an imagined scene, and five questions to talk about.
