Details
More than 130 poems by Christina Rossetti, each with a short plain-English note printed before it that says what happens in the poem and, where it helps, what an old word means. The poems become easier to follow, read alone or aloud. It is something a screen cannot give: a real book you hold, write in, and hand on.
Who it is for
For readers who love Rossetti and readers meeting her for the first time, for families who read poetry aloud together, and for anyone who would rather hold a poem on paper than scroll to it on a phone. With its presentation page, it is a considered gift.
What is inside
Two of Rossetti's own books of poems, printed in the order she published them.
- Part One: Goblin Market, and Other Poems (1862). It opens with Goblin Market, the story of two sisters, Laura and Lizzie, and the fruit sold by goblin men, told across 21 pages. Among the shorter poems that follow are Cousin Kate, A Birthday, Remember, Maude Clare, Echo, The Convent Threshold and Up-Hill, and it closes with a group of devotional poems.
- Part Two: The Prince's Progress, and Other Poems (1866). After the long title poem come Twice, Songs in a Cornfield, A Royal Princess, Good Friday and more devotional verse. Poems first printed in magazines and hymn collections carry the name and date of that first printing, a few of them later than 1866.
- A five-page contents list, an About This Book introduction, and a presentation page with lines for the owner, the giver, the occasion and the year.
Each page is framed by a thin double rule, with small hummingbird and flower drawings in the corners. The poems are set in Garamond, with the note in 16-point type above each one.
